It was a night like so many others when the Night Nurse started her shift at the Ho-llowhalls Psychiatric Institution. Frankly the place creeped her out. but the lucrative penalty rates for working the night shift were worth putting up with the discomfort and many inconveniences of such an old building. The Victorian Era Asylum was long overdue for a major overhaul, but the demand for places to put the criminally insane meant that would not be happening any time soon!
Picking up her clipboard she went through the wards checking that the Meds dispensed earlier had kicked in, and those considered low risk were comfortably settled for the night.
Next she went from door to door to assure herself nothing untoward was likely to occur in the locked cells of the High Risk inmates. She was pleased to see that, for once, she was not met by the blazing stare that so often disconcerted her! Tonight, he was huddled in foetal position under his blanket with his face to the wall, instead of pacing and muttering, or, worse still barking orders at her as if he was still a respected doctor and she a Nurse on his staff!
Dealing with him was always upsetting! Whenever she had occasion to speak to him in his more rational moments his eyes were mocking, he tried to quiz her on her medical knowledge or draw her into giving an opinion on the Medications and treatments being administered to other patients by the resident Doctor! As if he was still competent to practice...
